Asphaltic coatings are traditionally used to protect the roof and to extend its life. These coatings include alumination (silver coating) and solvent or clay-based coatings.

More of today’s coatings are reflective, high albedo coatings or “Cool Roof Coatings,” that not only increase the roof life span but protect from weathering, UV degradation, and reduce energy consumption. Cool roof coatings include Acrylic, silicone, Hypalon, butyl and polyurea.

High Albedo* coatings are required in some municipalities to reduce the “Urban Heat Island Effect,” where temperatures can be 6-8 degrees hotter than surrounding areas. Scientists call these cities “Urban Heat Islands.” The higher temperatures increase air energy costs and raise pollution levels. The cause includes dark surfaces that absorb more heat from the sun and less vegetation that would provide shade. Hence, the popularity of reflective coatings and “Green Roofs.”

*Albedo is the fraction of the sunlight that is reflected. When an object reflects most of the light that hits it, it has high albedo.
