Single Ply systems

Single-ply roofs are an excellent choice for protecting flat and low-slope roofs from the elements. They come in long sheets that installers roll out on the roof and bond together to create a watertight membrane. They’re applied directly to the roof substrate, making them a fast and economical choice.

Features

  • Single-ply roof materials are generally referred to as elastomeric systems, which are either thermoplastic or thermosetting in nature.
  • Thermoplastic materials are readily formed or changed in shape upon the application.
  • There are several ways to attach Single Ply Membranes - Ballasted, Adhered or Mechanically Attached.
  • Single Ply Membranes may be used in retrofitting existing Built Up, Modified or even Metal roofing systems.

Benefits

  • Great flexibility, lightweight, easy to install, and competitive in price.
  • Single-ply roofing materials are resistant to UV radiation, acid rain conditions, and perform well under dramatic weather changes.
  • Depending on the level of protection desired, we have labor and material warranties available for up to 30 years.
  • Consistency in quality as these are manufactured in a factory under stringent quality control guidelines.
  • Single-ply membranes may be used in retrofitting existing built-up roof systems and modified bitumen roof systems.
  • It can be used on different roof configurations, including flat and low-slope roofs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is single-ply roofing?

A single-ply roof is a roofing membrane that is applied directly to the roof substrate. Unlike built-up roofs, they don’t require multiple layers of material, making them faster to install.
  • What is the life expectancy of a single-ply roof?

The manufacturers provide labor and material warranties for up to 30 years, but professionally installed systems that are maintained well have been know to perform even longer.
  • Can you walk on a single-ply roof?

However, if the roof is exposed to frequent traffic, high density coverboards under the membrane or walkway pads are recommended for better protection.
  • Can a single-ply roof be repaired?

One of the values of a single-ply roof is how easily it can be repaired. The type of repair depends on the type of roof and the extent of the damage, but single-ply roofs can be patched with like materials that are heat-welded, chemically-bonded or taped to restore their waterproof properties.
  • How thick is a single-ply roof?

The thickness of a single-ply roof depends on the material type chosen, but it typically ranges from between 45 mils (1.14 mm) and 90 mils (2.29 mm). Common thicknesses are 45, 60, and 80 mils.
  • What is the maximum pitch for a single-ply roof?

Single-ply membranes can be installed on vertical walls. For higher walls and roofs with a 4:12 pitch or greater, additional securement methods are required to ensure they're safe, long-lasting and maintain their watertight properties.
  • How do you maintain a single-ply roof?

Maintaining a single-ply roof requires regular inspections, cleaning debris and any films or chemicals on the surface, making small repairs on penetrations and seams, and ensuring there isn’t any excessive ponding.
  • How are single-ply roofs installed?

Single-ply roofs are installed by rolling out long strips of EPDM, TPO, PVC, or other materials across the roof. The seams between the strips are either chemically adhered with tapes, adhesives or heat-welded together to create one watertight membrane.
